"Original" art
I suspect the author was using the term ‘original art’ to refer to any object or painting that is not a reproduction. ‘Original’ isn’t synonymous with ‘expensive.’ I’ve purchased original art from a local artist who is not well-known and who does not charge a great deal of money for his wares. I’ve also sold my art to other people – all of it original.

I don’t think the author was encouraging or condoning materialistic behavior with that question. I suspect he wanted the reader to think about how much of what she owns is “authentic” as opposed to “artificial.”
