healing mistrust

From an email to someone...

Mistrust is always the first knee-jerk response to getting hurt. "Well, you hurt me, so obviously I can't trust you." Mistrust just breeds mistrust--because I don't trust, I do things out of obligation and I look for ways to hurt in return (aka "make you understand how I feel.") Wouldn't it be a neat thing if I just talked about how I feel? Oh, but that requires trust. Yes, trust is a choice. Most things are choices--relationships are very rarely about feeling warm and fuzzy toward someone, although feeling warm and fuzzy sure does help sometimes.
