interesting factoids about me

hurricaneamy inspired me to put up some random facts about me that people might not know... So here they are.

  1. I was born in the middle of a cross-country move. Oops! I think I didn't like the idea of living in Gulfport, MS, even as an infant!

  2. I was given a 30 percent chance of survival at birth.

  3. I was learning about things at age three that would become key points in my life: low and high notes and buttons on the tape recorder. It's all on tape.

  4. I was fascinated with languages from a young age, partially because I grew up in the Houston area and had classmates in the bilingual program. I tried to teach myself Spanish when I was 11 using the Berlitz course, which I found in the Houston Library for the Blind; and I knew enough to make friends with a new student in the fall who spoke no English.

  5. I was a peer counselor in name in high school, but my real activity as a peer counselor was done through the Texas Commission for the Blind between the spring of my junior year and the time I left for college. There were 70 teenagers on the mailing list, and I organized regular outings for them and called to invite them. Many never came, but I forged telephone-based relationships with about 75 percent of them.

  6. I never cooked anything without supervision until the day I graduated from high school. That summer I had a crash course in all kinds of skills I had never learned--quite embarrassing and now why I feel so strongly about helping other teens with disabilities who didn't learn these things early.

  7. I took ten years to finish my B.A.--because I almost finished degrees in elementary education with an endorsement in education of the visually impaired, English, Christian ministries, and music business. I finally got my degree in psychology.

  8. I sang with the choir at UIL contest when I was 15 and then went to get my wisdom teeth removed. Two days later, I was eating pizza.

  9. I have never had a cavity. It's my one medical victory.

  10. I have often dreamed about traveling to another part of the world as a missionary or interpreter.

  11. I learned both French and Spanish and can understand both fairly well, although my speaking abilities are very rusty. I'd like to learn Vietnamese and for some reason have always felt a lot of compassion for the country and its people.

  12. I am fascinated by the history of Biblical lands and peoples, particularly Israel, and I would like to find a way to study archeology.

  13. Although I am afraid of storms, I am also fascinated by them.
