the mining accident and aftermath

It's taken me a couple of days to make any connection with my feelings about the mining accident in West Virginia and related events. It seemed so huge at first that I couldn't even think about it. Also, I think that my thoughts were tied up a lot with coping with illness here. Now that I have a bit of relief in the breathing department, I can stop worrying about recovery and invest the time in writing.

I don't know if my words could ever reach anyone who needs them, but I needed to write them. I really don't know who reads my journal--it's public on purpose. Maybe somehow the person who needs these words most will see them... *prays*

service cats and "training"

Yesterday on the cat list, someone asked about where to get a cat trained in the U.K. for work as a service cat. I told him that I couldn't have answered even if he lived in the States. Following is a modified version of what I wrote to him--I added a few additional details regarding Inca's behavior.

the $64,000 question

What I want to know is...

If a new tropical storm forms now, will they continue with Greek alphabet or go to 2006 names even though the season doesn't start until June 1?

the answer

Aha! From the CNN article on Zeta, which is still out there:

The 2006 season officially begins June 1, but any tropical storms that form at any time this year would be part of its tally. The first name on the list is Alberto.

I win the $64,000.

Forecasters predict that hurricane seasons will be more active than usual for at least another decade.

But exactly what that means is really anyone's guess. Straw, anyone?

poverty in America

There is a discussion in the psychology community which mostly concerns the earning potential of a person with a Bachelor's degree in psychology. The original question was whether it's possible to earn $40,000/year without going to grad school. So far the general consensus is that most entry level positions are low-paying with the exception of computer-related work and that a person either must work somewhere for a long time in order to earn the big bucks or else hav an advanced degree. An advanced degree! To earn $40,000/year! That's just middle class!

Just some things to ponder.
