commentary on awful joke about New Orleans and immigrants

There are some things that aren't funny... Why people insist on making jokes out of them I will never understand!

A win win-win situation.
Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border,
take the dirt and raise the levies in New Orleans
and put the Florida alligators in the moat.
Any other problems you want me to solve?

Yes, I understand that it's not serious. I even understand why people laugh at it and why some people think that humor helps a stressful situation become more bearable. But I don't find this funny at all It was posted to the hurricane support group on Yahoogroups. As I posted back, I hope there are no Mexicans on the group. After all, they have hurricanes, too, and all of Mexico isn't a desolate third-world-like place. Why do we disrespect Mexico so much as a nation because some of its people choose to disrespect our country's laws? I wonder how many people come here from Mexico legally--or try to and don't have the money for immigration fees because they are what many people in Mexico are: poor. Is it so wrong to want a better life for one's children? There might be a very good reason why some of those parents need that better life for their children! I'm not so willing to hate people because they are poor and want what people from affluent nations can get so easily. A fair number of them are extremely hard-working people who would send their children away to be cared for by others if it was best. That's a lot more than I can say for many Americans. Mexicans know what manual labor is... To us Americans, "hard work" means sitting in an office all day pushing papers, taking a couple of breaks and getting an hour off for lunch, and doing it all in the AC, and coming home to heat up a TV dinner in the microwave.

I'm all for expecting that people come here legally. I'm NOT for racist jokes, ever. The above was just plain mean-spirited. If saying this makes me some kind of dull person who has no sense of humor, then so be it. At least I have a heart!

I haven't even touched what this says about the attitude the joker has about the levee problem. Why would anyone joke about that at all? And the implication of it all is just horrible: we can fix New Orlaans with worthless Mexican dirt!

  • I do still exist

For those who are still reading (and I do see that a few are still here), I am posting a very, very short summary, like one of those very short…

  • Tired of tests yet?

Just testing another ap. I think I don't like it, but it does update both blogger and Lj and seems less clunky than the other LJ app. So far the best…

  • testing

I am testing the IPhone app to see how accessible it is. Supposedly you can do a cut but I think I have to get skilled at selecting a lot of text.…
