notes from ethics class

Posting this so that I can file it later.... My ethics professor says, "Shouldn't our churches and communities be such that when someone loses their memory, that memory is captured by the community?"

My thought: That really would require us to get past pleasantries and get to know each other: hear each other's stories and learn what matters to each other. I once had a dream in which an elderly friend (who really was very ill at the time) asked me to "finish what I started." How can we finish what someone else started if we have no idea what that person has begun? We live our lives immersed in our own individual pursuits, and then those things fade when we die... Shouldn't life be better than this?

I really like that and you know he is really on to something. What a different world this would be if we took care of each other instead of relying on a greater force like the government to take care of everyone. I have angered many Republicans that I know by saying if the church and the communities areound them would take care of the hungry, homeless and the elderly the world would be better off and this has angered many people when I say this, but it is the truth. The fact of the matter is that we refuse to get to know our neighbors and understand where they live.

getting to know each other
I agree! If people want the private sector doing things instead of government, then the private sector ought to take the lead and do it all on its own without being told it should. Then all of this would be a non-issue. Sadly, since it doesn't, I am forced to vote for initiatives that get people taken care of.

Re: getting to know each other
I have to totally agree with you there. I am so sick and tired of people telling me how to vote and then their idea is political and they say if I vot for the person I want then our country is not safe, but excuse me me, if we are hungry and have internal problems then we are not safe and all of this other crap doesn't mean a thing.
